PHOENIX (KPHO/KTVK) –

It’s an out-of-the-box idea for housing, and soon people will be moving in.

Developers marked the grand opening of an eight-unit apartment community made from shipping containers Thursday at Grand and 12th avenues in Phoenix.

It’s the first apartment community of its kind in the Western U.S. said architect Brian Stark of StarkJames, and living in a steel box has its perks.

The shell of it, the container, is actually much stronger than your typical construction, he said.

The units, which are made of two shipping containers each, feature thick steel walls and spray foam so they’re more insulated than a typical home, Stark said.

There’s not a lot of noise transference between the units, so it’s really super quiet, Stark said.

The units are 740 square feet and feel like a cross between a one-bedroom and a studio. A central utility space with a kitchen and storage closet creates hallways that separate the bedroom and living area, but there are no doors. The units will rent for $1,000 a month and there is already a waiting list. One of the eight units will be used as an Airbnb.

Stark said the idea of reusing shipping containers for housing isn’t new.

This is something that’s been around a long time. It’s happened in Europe. It just hasn’t happened here yet, he said. If you go to architecture school, this is one of those projects that you do. You never think you actually will build it.

The project posed a challenge for the City of Phoenix Planning Development Department and required a more liberal reading of city building codes, said Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton. He said it’s part of a new approach to development in the city.

My attitude and the attitude of the City of Phoenix is, ‘What the heck? Let’s give it a shot!’ If you have an innovative idea and you want to bring it to Phoenix, you’re going to get the support of the city. We want great ideas to come to fruition in our city.

StarkJames is in the planning phase on another shipping container housing project on 2nd and Portland streets. The project, called The Oscar, will feature 24 shipping containers.
